Thornwood Community Council has been working with Glasgow Eco Trust, Glasgow Community Food Network and Love Thornwood to submit a proposal to Glasgow City Council’s Education Estates Board for permission to use Thornwood Primary School football pitches. To potentially turn the pitches to community greenspace.
Glasgow Eco Trust set up a survey where there was a positive response from our community. Lots of people shared their vision, views and concerns. From the survey a local event was held to encourage our community’s involvement and to gauge interest in a working group.
On 22nd October 2024 we held our first meeting of Thornwood Pitches Working Group. From this meeting we have agreed:
- Further meetings at the Church Hall, 2 to 4 Thornwood Terrace G11 7QZ
- Meetings space booked on Tuesday 19th November 2024, Tuesday 21 Jan 2025 and Tuesday 18th Feb 2025 from 6.30pm until 8.00pm
- Discussion around focusing on the smaller pitch area west of the Multi Use Gym Area (MUGA) to benefit the school and community.

- Secure the long-term future of the area as open/greenspace for the school and wider community.
- Set up governance through the working group.
- Keep children at the heart of everything we do.
- Promote access to the MUGA as a public asset.
- Discuss sustainability and options for the space and source funding options.
- Assist biodiversity and welcome support from the Butterfly Conservation.
- To work with Wheatley Homes in tackling social issues such as social isolation and loneliness to promote diversity and inclusion.
From the working group we can discuss the long-term benefits of a community greenspace. Set up a community structure to oversee its development, look at other successful community ventures and how they sustain themselves.
Finally, to assess this amazing space and embrace its huge potential and prepare a supportive network to help local people address the challenges in their lives and build long term support networks and friendships.
